Mosaic Number 1 case with color section, guide and score
Score with color section open
The music in the “Mosaic Series” are formal compositions written in standard notation.
Each work employs pulses and repeated phrases that carry through the piece and are combined with other phrases
over a harmonic structure that changes key often.
The compositions are performed using multi-track recordings featuring keyboards, synthesizers,
and drum programming. All instruments are played by me and recorded in my studio.
This book work is a visual transcription of the composition “Mosaic Number 2.”
Every note in the piece is assigned a color. The pages are divided in a grid with 5 octaves (sixty notes) arranged
vertically and 4 measures of 12 eighth notes each arranged horizontally.
The five voices, 2 vibraphones, piano and contrabass, are each assigned a color.
The pitch is defined by the vertical position and the note value is defined by the horizontal space it takes up on the grid.
The contrabass, piano left hand, and the 2nd vibraphone emerge from the bottom. The first vibraphone and
the piano right hand emerge from the top.
The concert key scale of the improvised soprano saxophone is shown in yellow over the grid.
