Mosaic Number 4 book and score
Book open showing 4 panel sets
Mosaic Number 4 is a book work that is a visual transcription of my music composition of the same name.
The music in the “Mosaic Series” are formal compositions that employ pulses and repeated phrases that carry through each
piece and are combined with other phrases over a harmonic structure that changes key often.
Mosaic Number 4 began as a series of alto saxophone improvisations in the the key of E flat.
A number of parts were selected and transcribed; other voices were constructed around them.
There are seven voices in all: bass, piano left and right hands, two alto saxophones, soprano saxophone and vibraphone.
All instruments were played by me and recorded in my studio.
The visual transcription depicts 16 measures which are noted on the score that is included with the book.
A grid for each measure is constructed with a range of 22 notes arranged vertically; the measure’s 12 eighth notes arranged horizontally.
Each instrument is assigned a color and shown on a separate Duralar sheet painted with enamel.
Each sheet (voice) can be viewed separately, or all voices can be viewed together through the transparent sheets,
thus creating a visual mosaic of the sound of the measure.
